Summary Reader Response Draft #1

In the article, “Helloface Innovative Facemask” by University of Hertfordshire (2022), Introducing an innovative face mask that is both transparent, allowing for visibility, and functions like a typical mask. This mask is designed for individuals who are partially deaf and rely on lip reading. The inspiration for the "Helloface" mask came from this need. Based on the article “Helloface” is an innovative alternative to Type IIR EN14683 medical face masks made up of a 3-ply construction that prevents large particles from reaching patients. The "Helloface" mask is deemed safe for any application. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing as they do not have to remove their mask to communicate. According to research, there are approximately 11 million registered deaf or hard-of-hearing people in the UK. The creator of the mask Dean ezienkel understood the significance of having lip reading and facial expression as he himself experience with his wife which got him inspired him to find a solution to resolve the issue he is facing. This could also solve the problems in the medical sector and in industry that requires face recognition, which it has been hard due to the covid-19 pandemic where mask must be worn at all times.

The concept behind these face masks is ingenious as it allows us to connect with deaf individuals in scenarios where lip reading is required. However, ordinary masks are not transparent to allow visual communication of lip reading. Removing the mask for even a moment can increase the risk of transmission.

It is important to increase awareness about the challenges faced by the deaf community during the COVID-19 pandemic, so they are not excluded. From an article “Masks also create enormous challenges for members of the Deaf community who use sign language, clinicians with hearing loss, and other populations.” (Chodosh, J., Weinstein, B. E., & Blustein, J, 2020). This has a significant impact on the deaf community, as many individuals struggle to deliver speech and communicate effectively, which can be hazardous. The article also mentioned, “poor communication was the likely cause of their documented worse health outcomes” (Chodosh, J., Weinstein, B. E., & Blustein, J, 2020). This situation can pose a risk to the life of a deaf individual, as they may not be able to convey the correct information to a doctor, leading to incorrect medical procedures being performed.

The Transparent Medical Face Mask offers a unique solution to the challenges posed by traditional face masks. Its transparent body allows for full facial recognition, enabling users to communicate effectively through lip movement and facial expressions and it is compatible with face ID. The mask is made from lightweight and recyclable material, making it both environmentally friendly and comfortable to wear (Indiegogo, n.d). It features adjustable ear loops and straps, as well as a CE mark anti-fogging feature, to ensure a secure and clear fit (Indiegogo, n.d). Additionally, the P3 mask is reusable, and can be washed at 80°C up to 30 times (Indiegogo, n.d).  It is available in different sizes to accommodate different face shapes. With this mask, users can show off their smile and share their non-verbal emotions with ease. Another advantage is that it addresses the issue of discomfort for users who must wear glasses and masks at the same time.

While face masks can help prevent the spread of infections, they also have their drawbacks. Just like any other tool, face masks have both pros and cons. From an article, “Breathing through the same mask can dampen it, causing excessive moisture, resulting in it becoming airtight. When a mask becomes airtight, the wearer’s air that he or she inhales and exhales becomes unfiltered and dirty around the edges, endangering themselves and others.” (Ruiz, 2021). This highlights the potential challenges associated with wearing face masks. While there aren’t any sources stating the drawback "Hellomask", the high cost of their masks is a concern. According to a website selling the product, a basic transparent medical face mask costs $22 and a P3 mask with a filter cost $51 (Indiegogo, n.d.). These prices may make the masks inaccessible to many individuals, as they are significantly more expensive than other options on the market.

In conclusion, the innovation idea of the “Helloface” has given a solution to resolve the issue. The mask does not only provide protection from illness or additional protection, but at the same time it solve the problem for deaf or individual that rely on lip reading. This will give a kind of a self-confidence for them to be able to live normally. This will also inspire other creative minds to be able to contribute wonderful ideas to create something for people in need.
